What Is Coconut Coir?. Coir is a 100% natural by-product of coconut harvesting done using sustainable methods in India and Sri Lanka. Coconut Coir is from the coarse fibers extracted from the husk on the outer shell of a coconut. Commercial greenhouses are increasingly using coir as a growing medium in their operations. Used in the same way as peat moss to make good soil coir is a better sustainable alternative. Coir has a superior water holding capacity creates excellent air space and drainage and is useful in modern hydroponics and as a soil amendment for potted plants containers and gardens. Good soil can make all the difference!. Coconut Coir is superior to peat moss and rock wool for structural stability water absorption and drainage and doesnt decompose as quickly. By adding coir to your soil your plants will require less fertilizer will develop more elaborate and stronger root systems and are more resistant to disease pathogens and weeds. How Can You Use Coir To Make Good Soil?. Use it in sandy soils to help keep nutrients and moisture close to plant roots instead of washing away. Use it in clay soils to help break up hard-packed earth and move nutrients and moisture through the soil. Adding one part coir to two parts soil or potting mix containing compost can make good soil as a growing medium for potted plants or an outdoor garden or raised bed. By maintaining a consistent level of moisture and air and by being naturally disease and weed free coir creates a good soil environment for starting seeds and cuttings and can be used as a seed-starting medium. How Does Coconut Coir Reuse Earths Gifts?. Coir is a sustainable alternative to peat moss in that it is quickly and easily renewable and does not produce the same environmental damage caused by peat mining. Coir is easier to hydrate and lasts longer in soil than peat moss. Coir is also naturally free of bacteria plant disease fungal spores weeds seeds and pathogens making it superior to peat moss as an amendment to make good soil. Coirs neutral pH of 5.8-6.8 allows it to efficiently release nutrients to plant roots and reduces the need to use dolomite lime in the garden. Coconut Coir is 100% natural. Coir comes compressed into bricks which makes for easy convenient storage. Add water and soak your brick for at least 1 hour before using it.
