1. Introduction

Gabion boxes, uniformly partitioned, are wire made containers of various sizes. It is interconnected with other similar containers and filled with stones at the site of use to form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures such as retaining walls, sea walls, channel linings, revetments and weirs for earth retention. In order to strengthen the boxes, all the edges of structure are selvedged with wire of greater diameter.
Gabion box is divided into cells by diaphragms positioned at approximately 1m centers.
The wire is heavily zinc coated and for protection it can also be PVC coated. Stainless steel wire is also available according to customers’ special order. Gabion boxes are supplied in various sizes. 2m in length, 1m in width and 1m in height is the most popular size. The diameter of the wire used can also be varied.
2. Characterisitcs
1. Flexible. It can tolerate huge forces without breaking or cracking. It can adapt itself to some degree of movement.
2. Durable. If coated with PVC, the life of structure gets longer which is better for hydraulic works.
3. Permeable. Gabion box filled with stones provides an effective permeability throughout the structure.
4. Economical. Especially when the stones to fill the structure are close to the work area. Low maintenance is required for the construction works.
5. Strength. It can absorb the huge amount of energy and is very strong under tension generated by the nature.Well-made gabion structures can exist in perfect condition for many decades.
