Industrial EDI Cell for High Purity Water Treatment
Continuous Electrodeionization (EDI) Module for RO-EDI Systems
Introduction
CHONGYANG WATER EDI Cells are designed to continuously produce high-purity water without the need for chemical regeneration. Installed downstream of a reverse osmosis (RO) system, an Electrodeionization (EDI) Cell removes remaining dissolved ions through a combination of ion exchange resins, ion-selective membranes, and direct current electricity.
Compared with conventional mixed-bed ion exchange systems, EDI technology provides stable water quality, lower operating costs, and fully automatic operation while eliminating the use of acid and caustic chemicals for resin regeneration.
Our industrial EDI cells are available in multiple capacities and are widely integrated into RO-EDI water purification systems for industries including power generation, semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, biotechnology, laboratory water, chemical processing, surface coating, hydrogen energy, automotive urea (AdBlue®/DEF) production, and other industrial high-purity water applications.
What Is an EDI Cell?
An EDI Cell (Electrodeionization Module) is the core component of a continuous deionization system. It combines mixed ion-exchange resins, cation exchange membranes, anion exchange membranes, and a DC electrical field to continuously remove dissolved ionic contaminants from RO permeate.
Unlike traditional ion exchange systems that require periodic chemical regeneration, EDI cells regenerate the resin continuously using electricity. This allows uninterrupted operation while significantly reducing maintenance, chemical handling, and wastewater generation.
A standard RO-EDI system typically consists of:
Pretreatment System
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
RO Permeate Tank
Booster Pump
EDI Cell
UV Sterilizer (Optional)
Final Filter (Optional)
High Purity Water Tank
Distribution System
This configuration delivers consistently low conductivity water suitable for demanding industrial applications.
Typical Applications
CHONGYANG WATER EDI Cells are widely used in industries requiring continuous high-purity water production, including:

How an EDI Cell Works
The EDI process begins with RO permeate entering the EDI cell. Inside the module, mixed-bed ion exchange resins capture residual dissolved ions, while a direct current electric field continuously regenerates the resin.
Cation exchange membranes allow positively charged ions to migrate toward the cathode, while anion exchange membranes transport negatively charged ions toward the anode. These ions are concentrated in separate reject channels and discharged continuously.
Because the resin is regenerated electrically rather than chemically, the system operates continuously without shutdown for regeneration.
The result is a stable supply of ultra-low conductivity water with minimal operator intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an EDI Cell require chemical regeneration?
No. The resin inside the EDI cell is continuously regenerated by electricity.
What feed water is required?
EDI cells are designed to operate with high-quality RO permeate.
Can the EDI Cell replace a mixed-bed ion exchange system?
Yes. In most industrial high-purity water applications, an EDI cell can replace traditional mixed-bed ion exchange, reducing chemical consumption and maintenance.
What conductivity can be achieved?
Typical product water conductivity is ≤0.1 μS/cm, depending on the quality of the RO permeate and system design.
Can the module be integrated into an existing RO system?
Yes. CHONGYANG WATER EDI cells are suitable for both new installations and upgrades to existing RO systems.
