Aluminium round bar, also called aluminium rod, is one of the most popular and versatile aluminium products due to its machinability, durability and many varied applications. 6063 (UNS A96063) is an aluminum bar with good extrudability and a high-quality surface. This alloy is used for standard architectural shapes, custom solids, and heatsinks. Due to its electrical conductivity, it is also used for electrical applications in T5, T52, and T6.
The main chemical components of 6063 aluminum bar include aluminum (Al, balance), silicon (Si, 0.20~0.60%), copper (Cu, ≤0.10%), magnesium (Mg, 0.45~0.9%), zinc (Zn, ≤ 0.10%), manganese (Mn, ≤0.10%), titanium (Ti, ≤0.10%), chromium (Cr, ≤0.10%), iron (Fe, ≤0.35%), and other individual elements whose content does not exceed 0.05%
The mechanical properties of 6063 aluminum bars are excellent. Its tensile strength σb is between 130 and 230MPa, its ultimate tensile strength is 124MPa, its tensile yield strength is 55.2MPa, its elongation is 25.0%, its elastic coefficient is 68.9GPa, and its bending limit Strength is 228MPa, Bearing Yield Strength is 103MPa, Fatigue Strength is 62.1MPa
6063 aluminum bar or rod has excellent welding performance and no tendency to stress corrosion cracking.
Among aluminum alloys that can be strengthened by heat treatment, Al-Mg-Si alloys are the only alloys in which stress corrosion cracking has not been found.
Consider alloy 6061 for applications where getting the best strength is more important than corrosion resistance. Alloy 6063 is the most popular aluminum alloy for extrusions. It offers slightly better corrosion resistance and a very appealing surface finish that is exceptional for anodizing.
