Calcium silicate is composed of CaO and SiO2 in different proportions, including tricalcium silicate and dicalcium silicate. It is divided into two types: hydrated and anhydrous. It is a white to off-white free-flowing powder, even after absorbing a large amount of water or other liquids. It is insoluble in water but can form a gel with inorganic acids. The pH value of a 5% suspension is 8.4 - 10.2. The relative density is 2.9.

Calcium silicate is an inorganic neutral filler. It has good wettability to various resins, is easy to mix, can increase the thermal conductivity, improve the hardness, change the adhesive properties, and enhance the flame retardancy. It is mainly used in silicone rubber, coatings, paints, refractory materials and other chemical industries that require ultrafine fillers and in the manufacture of products in related industries.
It is a rubber reinforcing agent, which is made by specially treating wollastonite powder on the surface. Different from traditional materials such as light calcium carbonate and clay, activated calcium silicate has a complete acicular crystal structure, with an aspect ratio of 5.1 - 15:1; the silica content is 46% - 51%. It is a natural mineral short fiber that is odorless and non-toxic. Due to the acicular short fiber structure of activated calcium silicate, after surface activation and modification treatment, active functional groups are produced. Therefore, it has good affinity and high dispersibility to rubber, thereby improving the mechanical strength of products and significantly enhancing the performance and use value of composites.
Broadly speaking, calcium silicate is a hydrate of calcium oxide and silicon dioxide. Its molecular formula can be expressed as: CaO·mSiO2·nH2O. It is a white powder, odorless and non-toxic, insoluble in water but soluble in acids.
Activated calcium silicate has rubber reinforcing properties comparable to those of white carbon black, and can significantly improve the modulus at a given elongation, tensile strength, tear strength and wear resistance of materials. Its price is more than 40% lower than that of white carbon black. Therefore, it is one of the products with the most development prospects in the chemical industry. After surface treatment, this product has strong surface activity and is widely used in rubber, plastics, resins, papermaking, coatings, pesticides, daily chemicals, etc. In addition, it is also widely used in drugs and cosmetics (such as ointments, emulsions, creams, suppositories and tablets).
