THE SHORT ANSWER
If operators keep leaving the station to fetch a wrench, a bigger tool box will not fix it. Park a double-sided mobile rack beside the workstation and load both faces — hand tools on one side, parts bins on the other.
On the 1540mm three-tier double-sided model, the operator reaches instead of travels — the tool comes to the point of use, not the other way round.

WHY THE WALK COSTS MORE THAN IT LOOKS
Ask a line supervisor what slows the shift down and the machine rarely comes first. It is the walk. A fitter needs a torque wrench, walks to the tool room, waits for the store man, signs it out, walks back. Twelve minutes gone on a job that should take two.
The bill never appears as walking time. It appears as an idle station, a late batch, overtime at the end of the week. Multiply one ten-minute trip by three shifts and twenty stations and it stops being small.
Walking hides mistakes too. When two stations share one tool set, tools go missing. When tools go missing, someone grabs the nearest substitute. That is how the wrong socket ends up on a torque-critical joint.
Line-side storage is not new — what changed is that a braked cart can now be loaded once and moved wherever the work is that day.
WHAT THE 1540MM DOUBLE-SIDED MODEL ACTUALLY HOLDS
Three tiers, two working faces, one footprint. One face takes hooks and tool holders; the other takes a louvered panel and parts bins. The operator stands in one spot and works both sides, so the walking stops and the bins come off the floor.

The frame accepts the full accessory set, so a layout can be standardised across every station:
Storage bins — rear 4# bin, rear 2# bin, combination 1# bins in blue, purple, red and yellow
Hooks — ring hook, U-hook, socket hook, bin hook, saw-blade hook, six-rod hook
Tool holders — wrench holder, drill-bit holder, wire frame, A-frame
Angled hooks — double angled 50mm, double diagonal 100mm, single angled 50mm, single angled 100mm
Feet — adjustable rubber-footed levelling feet on fixed models, braked polyurethane casters on mobile models
Once the layout is fixed, paint or tape tool outlines onto the panel. That turns the rack into a shadow board: a missing tool is visible from across the aisle — the part of 5S that usually gets abandoned first.
THE BUILD DETAILS THAT DECIDE YEAR THREE
Cold-rolled steel, not hot-rolled. Hot-rolled sheet is cheaper, but rough-surfaced and loosely toleranced. Hooks sit at odd angles, panels flex, and a forklift nudge leaves a permanent bend. Cold-rolled steel holds flat, so the layout you set in month one still lines up in month twelve.
A standard hole pattern. The panel takes 10 × 10 mm holes at 38 mm centres — the international standard, so any standard hook on the market fits. A proprietary hole pattern locks you into one supplier for the life of the rack.
Panels that swap. Square-hole for hand tools, louvered for bins. Same frame, same fixings, one screwdriver. A rack bought for an assembly cell can be re-purposed as a picking station without new hardware.
A base that stays square. A double-sided rack carries more load on the same footprint, so the base beam is reinforced with triangular gussets. That is what keeps the frame true after a year of being pushed around a shop floor.
Casters chosen for the floor, not the catalogue. Polyurethane rolls quietly on epoxy and polished concrete and does not mark either. Rubber flat-spots under a parked load; hard nylon is cheap, loud and hard on soft flooring. Every caster here is braked, so the rack stops where you park it.
Powder coating instead of paint. Coolant and cutting oil eat through a painted finish in a year. Powder coating wipes clean and resists the chips that fly off a machining centre.
WHERE A MOBILE RACK IS THE WRONG CHOICE
A mobile rack sold into the wrong cell becomes a nuisance, so this part matters.
If the operator never leaves the station, a fixed wall-mounted rack costs less and uses no floor space. The 1890mm four-tier single-sided model is the usual pick.
If the floor is cracked or uneven, casters will jam and the rack will walk. Level the slab or go fixed.
If the clear aisle is under about 800mm, a 610mm-deep double-sided cart blocks the route. A single-sided rack at 375mm deep fits where the double does not.
If the load is heavy, put the bins on the lower tiers. A top-heavy cart that brakes hard will tip.
