Steam Tube Coal Dryer for Low-Rank Coal
Steam Tube Coal Dryer for Low-Rank Coal
Introduction
A steam tube coal dryer is an indirect thermal drying system designed to reduce high moisture levels in low-rank coals (such as lignite and sub-bituminous coal). By using steam circulating inside sealed internal tubes rather than direct flame contact, this dryer safely upgrades low-calorie coal into high-energy fuel with minimal volatile loss and low dust explosion risks.
Working Principle
Indirect Heating: High-pressure steam is piped into a rotating network of tubes running longitudinally inside the drum.
Conduction & Evaporation: Wet low-rank coal is fed into the drum shell, tumbling over the hot outer surfaces of the steam tubes as the drum rotates.
Moisture Discharge: Heat transfers via conduction, evaporating internal moisture from the coal without direct contact with flue gases or open flames.
Condensate Recovery: Water vapor is drawn off with a small sweep of air, while the steam inside the tubes condenses and is returned to the boiler system for closed-loop energy reuse.
Key Advantages
Superior Explosion Safety: Operating in a low-oxygen, indirect-heating environment eliminates open flames, drastically reducing dust explosion risks inherent to volatile low-rank coals.
Energy Recovery & Efficiency: Waste or low-pressure steam from nearby power plants or industrial boilers can be repurposed, driving down operational costs.
Minimal Coal Quality Degradation: Gentle indirect heat prevents volatile matter loss and over-cracking, preserving the coal's original structure and calorific upgrades.
Low Emissions: Because combustion gases do not touch the coal, exhaust volumes are tiny, making dust control and environmental compliance far easier.
Applications
Lignite & Sub-Bituminous Upgrading: Reducing moisture in low-rank coals from 30–50% down to market-ready levels prior to transport or combustion.
Mine-Mouth Power Plants: Pre-drying boiler feed coal using extraction steam to improve overall power plant efficiency and lower CO₂ intensity.
Coal Briquetting & Gasification: Preparing low-rank coal feedstock to meet strict moisture standards for gasifiers or briquetting operations.
