Although the exact ladle analysis may be shown in the mill test certificate, ASTM A240 grade 304 typical chemistry includes carbon (max 0.08%), manganese (max 2.00%), phosphorus (max 0.045%), sulfur (max 0.030%), silicon (max 0.75%), chromium (18.00% – 20.00%), and nickel (8.00% – 10.50%). This balanced austenitic composition gives the plate good ductility, high impact toughness at low temperatures, and sound weld solidification resistance. When appropriate filler metal such as ER308L or E308L is used, weld deposits normally retain good mechanical integrity. The plates can be cut, formed, rolled, and welded using common shop equipment, which helps to reduce manufacturing lead time.
