Introduction to Cemented Carbide Materials
Cemented carbide (also widely known as hardmetal) is a composite material produced by powder metallurgy, consisting of hard carbide particles (typically tungsten carbide, WC) bonded together by a ductile metallic matrix (usually cobalt, Co). It is not a single homogeneous compound but a cermet—a ceramic-metal composite—designed to combine the extreme hardness and wear resistance of the carbide phase with the toughness and shock resistance of the metal binder.
Composition and Microstructure
The essential constitution is WC-Co. Tungsten carbide provides high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and retains its hardness at elevated temperatures. Cobalt, the binder, imparts toughness and enables the material to resist fracture and chipping. The ratio of hard phase to binder, along with the WC grain size, dictates the final properties. Typical commercial grades for machining contain 5–12 wt% Co, with grain sizes ranging from sub-micron (
Key Properties
Cemented carbide is characterized by an exceptional combination of properties:
High Hardness and Wear Resistance: It retains high hardness even at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for high-speed machining and wear parts.
High Elastic Modulus and Compressive Strength: It is extremely rigid, with an elastic modulus around 550 GPa for typical WC-Co grades.
Moderate Fracture Toughness: The cobalt binder provides sufficient toughness to withstand interrupted cuts and impact loads, though this is lower than that of tool steels.
Good Thermal Conductivity and Stability: It possesses good thermal shock resistance, which is critical for cutting operations.
Manufacturing
The production route is based on powder metallurgy. The process involves milling and mixing WC and Co powders (along with grain growth inhibitors or other carbides), pressing the mixture into a "green" compact, and then liquid-phase sintering at temperatures typically between 1400°C and 1450°C. During sintering, the cobalt melts and wets the WC grains, creating a dense, pore-free composite.
Applications
The unique property profile makes cemented carbide indispensable in demanding industrial applications:
Cutting Tools: The largest application area. Used for turning, milling, drilling, and threading inserts, as well as end mills and drills. They enable much higher machining speeds than high-speed steel.
Wear Parts: Used for dies, punches, seal rings, nozzles, and guides where abrasion resistance is critical.
Mining and Construction: Rock drill bits, excavation teeth, and road planing tools rely on the combination of hardness and toughness.
Other: It is also used in micro-drills for electronics, ballpoint pen balls, and even as a substitute for gold in jewelry due to its durability.
