The tine plates are curved and offset so the jaws close past each other along a long contact line rather than meeting on a flat face. Curved plates wrap a load; offsetting them means thin section cannot slip through a gap. Sharpness is a consumable; geometry is not.
Points on a grab in scrap and stone get peened over into a rounded stump, after which the jaw only squeezes. Square-cut wedges with a bevelled leading edge keep an edge form longer, and when the edge does go, it can be dressed back with a grinder. That is the difference between a consumable you service and a consumable you replace.
Every tine plate here is solid, braced by an outer ridge and a folded spine. A drilled-out panel loses section where the plate actually bends, and on a grab the plate bends on every close. Keeping it solid costs a little weight and removes the failure mode entirely.
This is a fixed-head grab: the jaws open and close, and there is no rotation motor, gearbox or swivel joint to service or to fail. Where the operator can position with the machine, the fixed head is lighter, cheaper and has nothing leaking at the top. Rotating versions remain available where the work genuinely needs them.
